CBRN Awareness
Training
Half-day programme for non-specialist staff. Recognise CBRN indicators, raise the alarm correctly, and follow your venue's shelter or evacuation protocol.
What Level 01 Delivers
CBRN Awareness (Level 01) is the entry point of the four-level CBRN curriculum. It is designed for staff who are not expected to respond to a CBRN incident — but who may be the first to notice one. A receptionist who recognises that a suspicious package is producing an unusual odour, raises the alarm immediately, and follows the correct evacuation protocol has done exactly what Level 01 prepares her to do. She has not tried to respond — she has enabled the response.
The programme covers the four CBRN hazard categories at recognition level — not technical detail, but enough to distinguish an unusual chemical smell from a normal cleaning product, an unusual powder delivery from standard mail, or an unusual symptom cluster in multiple people from a standard illness. It covers the venue's specific alarm-raising procedure and evacuation or shelter-in-place protocol, and the one instruction that non-specialist staff must follow above all others: do not approach, do not touch, do not re-enter.
Level 01 is a half-day programme delivered in a classroom format with a brief tabletop walk-through at the end. No prior knowledge is required. No physical training is involved. The investment is half a day; the return is a staff population that enables an effective CBRN response instead of accidentally compromising it.
What the Programme Covers
- The four CBRN hazard categories — what each looks like, smells like, and produces as early symptoms
- Indicators of a developing CBRN incident in built environments
- Alarm-raising: who to call, what to say, how much detail matters
- Shelter-in-place vs evacuation — how the decision is made and what staff do in each case
- What not to do: the actions that compromise first responders and contaminate clean zones
- Venue-specific evacuation routes and assembly points (adapted per client site)
Who This Level Is For
- Embassy and diplomatic mission front-of-house staff
- Corporate reception and facilities personnel at high-risk buildings
- Hospitality staff at high-profile venues and events
- Executive office and personal assistant staff in CBRN-relevant locations
- Any non-specialist employee in an organisation that holds Level 02+ certified responders
Next Level: Basic (Level 02)
Personnel who may be on-scene in the opening minutes of a CBRN incident — security officers, first-aiders, facility emergency wardens — require Level 02 Basic. Two days, practical exercises, detection equipment, PPE, and single-casualty decontamination.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does CBRN Level 01 Awareness training cover?
Level 01 covers recognition of the four CBRN hazard categories (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear), how to raise the alarm correctly, venue-specific shelter-in-place or evacuation protocols, and the specific actions non-specialist staff must avoid to protect themselves and enable first responders. It is a half-day classroom programme requiring no prior knowledge.
Who needs CBRN Awareness training?
Non-specialist staff at organisations with CBRN exposure: embassy front-of-house staff, corporate reception at high-risk buildings, hospitality personnel at high-profile venues, and executive office staff. Level 01 is the baseline for any staff who may encounter a CBRN indicator — regardless of whether they are expected to respond.
How long is the Level 01 CBRN Awareness programme?
Half a day — typically four hours including a brief tabletop walk-through scenario at the end. It can be delivered at the client's premises or at a Mission Support training facility. No equipment or prior preparation is required from participants.
Is Level 01 a prerequisite for the higher CBRN levels?
Level 01 is listed as the prerequisite for Level 02 (Basic), or equivalent prior CBRN exposure. In practice, most organisations delivering Level 02 to security and first-responder staff ensure that all wider staff have completed Level 01 so that the support population enables, rather than hinders, the response.
