CBRN basic training — PPE and detection equipment

    CBRN Basic
    Training

Two-day practical programme for first responders and security teams. Detection equipment, PPE, single-casualty decontamination, and clean handover to specialist services.

    What Level 02 Delivers

CBRN Basic (Level 02) is the first operational level of the curriculum — the level at which personnel cross from recognition to response. Participants complete two days of classroom instruction and practical exercises, emerging with the capability to operate detection equipment, don and doff PPE correctly, control a CBRN scene, perform single-casualty decontamination, and hand over cleanly to specialist teams.

Level 02 is designed for personnel who may be on-scene in the opening minutes of a CBRN incident: embassy security officers, facility emergency wardens, corporate first-responder teams, in-house security at high-risk premises. These are personnel whose role does not specify CBRN response as a primary mandate, but who have a realistic probability of being the first trained person present when an incident develops.

The practical exercises are conducted in controlled environments using agent simulants and full PPE. Drills are timed and assessed. Day one covers the classroom theory and PPE familiarisation. Day two is practical — detection instrument operation, scene control exercises, and a full decontamination drill assessed against procedural standards.

    What the Programme Covers

    • Chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threat recognition at field level
    • Detection instrument operation: colorimetric paper, PID, and radiation survey meter
    • PPE selection by agent class and environment
    • Full PPE donning and doffing sequences — timed, assessed, repeated until standard met
    • Clean/dirty zone establishment and management
    • Single-casualty decontamination: gross and technical sequences
    • Scene control and cordon establishment
    • Incident report structure and handover to specialist services
    • CBRNe: explosive-component assessment before PPE donning

    Prerequisites

Level 01 Awareness or equivalent prior CBRN exposure. Physical fitness sufficient to operate in full PPE for extended periods. Personnel with medical contraindications to respirator use are assessed individually.

    Who This Level Is For

    • Embassy security officers and diplomatic-mission protective staff
    • Corporate first-responder teams at high-risk facilities
    • Facility emergency wardens with on-scene authority
    • In-house security at pharmaceutical, chemical, or government-adjacent premises
    • Police and private security teams requiring operational CBRN baseline

    Next Level: Advanced (Level 03)

Teams with CBRN response formally in their mandate — embassy guards in high-threat postings, military CBRN sub-teams, corporate emergency-response cells — require Level 03 Advanced. Five days, multi-casualty decontamination, command coordination, and full-cycle incident management.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What does CBRN Level 02 Basic training cover?

Level 02 covers detection instrument operation, PPE selection and donning/doffing sequences, clean/dirty zone management, single-casualty decontamination (gross and technical sequences), scene control, cordon establishment, and structured handover to specialist services. It is a two-day programme including classroom instruction and practical exercises assessed against timed procedural standards.

Is CBRN Basic training physically demanding?

Participants are required to operate in full CBRN PPE during practical exercises — which involves heat stress, restricted movement, and reduced visibility. The physical demand is moderate, not extreme, but personnel with medical contraindications to respirator use are assessed individually before the practical day. Mission Support manages this as part of the pre-training administrative process.

What detection equipment is used in Level 02 training?

Level 02 training covers colorimetric paper for initial chemical screening, a photoionisation detector (PID) for volatile organic compounds, and a Geiger-Müller survey meter for radiological detection. Instrument operation — calibration checks, correct reading interpretation, and false-positive management — is covered in Day 1 classroom and reinforced in Day 2 practical exercises.

How many people can attend a Level 02 course?

Level 02 practical exercises are most effective with groups of 8–16 participants, allowing sufficient equipment for simultaneous drills while maintaining assessor-to-participant ratios that enable individual performance feedback. Larger organisations can be scheduled across multiple course dates. Group size is confirmed during programme scoping.
